THE STATE OF MEXICO
Located in Mexico?s central region in a zone of mountains
and valleys. The state of Mexico borders the states of Queretaro, Hidalgo, Morelos, Guerrero, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Michoacan and Mexico City. Thanks to its pleasant climate, it is one of the
most visited destinations in Mexico.
Among its many magical towns, you can visit Valle de Bravo, the ideal
place to relax and enjoy recreational activities. The town has a gorgeous lake,
cobblestone streets and houses with red tile roofs. It?s also an excellent spot
to do water sports and adventure tours. In the surrounding areas, you can visit
the Bosencheve National Park, the Monte Alto Reserve, and 25 km (15 mi) to the
north lies the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, where
monarch butterflies come to nest each year from November to March. Another good
place to relax is Ixtapan de la Sal, famous for its
therapeutic thermal springs.
Among the most traditional towns are Metepec,
known for its pottery, and Tepotzotlan, where you can
see beautiful constructions such as the Ex Convento
de San Francisco Javier, one of the most representative examples of Mexican
Baroque architecture.
In Toluca, the capital, you can learn about the state?s important history and
culture as you visit the various museums. You can also check out the Cosmovitral, one of the largest botanical gardens in the
world. About 48 km (30 mi) southwest is the Nevado de
Toluca National Park, the ideal place for mountain
bike riding and rock climbing.
The state of Mexico also has notable archaeological zones, such as Malinalco
and Teotihuacan, one of the most important pre-Hispanic capitals of ancient Mexico.
