HISTORICAL ARCHITECTURE
In Puerto Peñasco’s surrounding areas you can visit several religious
constructions that will take you back to the region’s colonial past.
Templo de Nuestra
Señora de la Purisima Concepcion. Located
in Caborca, more than 150 km (93 mi) southeast of
Puerto Peñasco, off Highway 37.
This Franciscan church was built between the 18th and 19th
centuries. The façade is of three bodies and of inverted pyramid form. The
interior has austere ornamentation. Open daily from 9:00 to 7:00.
Nuestra Señora del
Pilar y Santiago Cocospera Mission. Located
in Cocospera, 200 km (124 mi) southeast of Puerto Peñasco, off Highway 37. This was
one of the first missions founded by Father Eusebio
Kino in the 17th century. The only remaining features of the original
construction are the main nave and the adobe walls. Open daily from 8:00 to
6:00.
San Antonio de Oquitoa
Mission.Located
in Oquitoa, 193 km (120 mi) southeast of Puerto Peñasco, off Highway 37. This is
another mission built by Father Eusebio Kino in the
17th century. Restored in the 19th century, the mission
has a façade of two bodies and scallop decorations; the second body features
two recesses. The interior is lacking in adornments. Open daily from 9:00 to 7:00.
Templo de San Diego Pitiquito.
Located in Pitiquito, 162 km (100 mi) southeast of
Puerto Peñasco. This edifice, built in the 19th
century, has a plain façade with a doorway flanked by columns and a frieze
adorned with plant motifs. The interior houses the remains of a mural with
religious themes. Open daily from 9:00 to 7:00.
